  All too often customers are being held to ransom, so to speak, by unscrupulous Web hosting providers over the transfer of domain names. In the event this should happen to you we hope the information here may be of some use. Bear in mind, we are assuming there are no outstanding invoices or transfer fees owing to the Web host or domain registrar.

How to rescue your *.uk domain name.

  Unfortunately, due to the diversity of gTLD domain name registrars and their individual procedures for transferring domain names, this page only relates to the transfer of a *UK domain name in the event you can not contact the current Web host, or, they won't comply with your transfer request.

Initially, you should follow the Web hosts procedure for transferring the domain name, to the letter, keeping copies of all email, faxes and letters. In the event you receive no "human" response within 2 working days, the next step is to contact Nominet www.nominet.org.uk.

From the Nominet Web site:

If your current Web host refuses to release the Domain Name(s) to your new Web host, you should provide the Nominet Customer Support Department with the following:

  1. A signed request to move the Domain Name(s) to your new ISP including full details of the problem you are encountering. This request should be on the letterhead of the Domain Name Registrant:
    • If the Registrant is a registered company please provide the request on your corporate letterhead including the full company name, its Companies House registration number and registered office
    • If the Registrant is a sole trader or partnership the letterhead should include details of the proprietor or partners
    • If the Registrant is a private individual the request must appear on letterhead that includes the Registrant's home address
  2. A copy of your request(s) to your ISP to release the Domain Name(s)

Include your/registrant name, address, contact phone number and email address. Explain what you have done to contact the current Web host and the IPSTAG of the Web host you want to transfer the domain name to.

You should fax this information to Nominet on 01865 332288 or send it by registered post.

Finally, if the details given correspond with those originally submitted to Nominet, they will usually release your domain name, to the new IPSTAG holder, within 5 working days.

An example letter follows (as previously used by us):

Your or Company Name (must be registered domain owner)
Your or Company Address (as above)
Telephone and or
Fax number
Email address, preferably the same as used when registering the domain.

Dear Nominet Support

Please change the IPSTAG for the domain name "yourdomain.*UK" to "New host IPSTAG here".

I have tried on numerous occasions, but have been unable to get a response from the current Web host, "Their Name Here".
Please find attached proof of my requests/correspondence, with said Web host, for these changes to be made.
I have given them the required 2 working days to respond, without success.
Therefore I must ask that the change of IPSTAG be made by you on my/their behalf.

If you require any further information please contact me.

Regards,

{your (the registrant) signature}
{print your name}

  Good Luck !
