How Can I Tell Whether My Web Host Is In The UK Or The US?

Use the traceroute program which traces the route over the internet to the servers of your web hosting provider. This is on most UNIX systems as "traceroute", on Win95/98/NT PCs as "tracert", or you can use a web gateway at LINX UK (looking glass), select "trace" and enter the web site address in the address box.

Although a full discussion of traceroute is beyond this FAQ, generally, a trace that takes more than 80ms (from a fast connection) to the web hosting provider's server, or 200ms from a modem connection, is an ISP in the US. Other giveaway signs are hops that go through backbone providers like "alter.net", "above.net", "bbnplanet.net", "uu.net", "cw.net", and "sprint.net" means your provider is hosting in the US.
